My advice on Guns and Personal Protection
We all watch the news.  Thieves are breaking into homes, sometimes even while people are home.  People are being mugged and raped and
beaten on the streets.  Phoenix has a serial killer AND a serial rapist that has been running around all summer.  The cops can't seem to catch
him.  People are starting to get scared.  Parents warn their kids about "Stranger Danger" and kids aren't allowed to walk around unsupervised.
The level of fear in Phoenix right now is being compared to the "Son of Sam" summer in NY in the 70's.  Many people are buying guns
hoping to be able to protect themselves.  Others are unsure what to do.
I've got good news.  There is a cheap, inexpensive, and safe solution to your personal safety.  Don't buy a gun.  Buy some BEAR PEPPER
SPRAY
.  Why "bear" spray and not your regular "people spray"?  The spray designed for people is not effective.  It doesn't spray very far and is
designed to make sure that the people you spray it on don't get hurt too badly.  Let me ask you a question, if someone is running at you with a
knife in a parking lot at night, should you be worried about whether or not he gets hurt?  That's just ridiculous.
Let me break it down for you logically.  I'm going to make a list of the pros and cons of Guns as opposed to Bear Pepper Spray.
Problems with Guns:
#1:  Cost:  average gun is $500.  Then ammunition costs a lot, up to $0.50 per bullet.  You must shoot at least 100 bullets a month to keep
yourself in practice.  That's $50 a month, not to mention $5 per day at the range, and gasoline to get to the range, and time spent.  Also, to get
a permit to carry concealed costs about $150 and an entire Saturday.  It must be renewed every 3 years (I think).   So you can easily spend up
to $1000 in 1 year.  Easily.

#2:  Danger:  this one is obvious.  You can hurt yourself, or someone else, or a family member might find it and hurt themselves.  This is like
having a bomb in your house.  The proper way to keep a gun in the house is to keep it locked in a safe, and that's more expensive and not very
convenient if you are woken up in the middle of the night by an intruder...

#3:  Difficulty:  we've all seen the movies where a guy pulls out a gun and hits the bad guy.  This is just bullshit.  Let's go to the range someday.
I will show you how hard it is to hit a person-sized target even at 10 yards!  And that's with you taking your time, and not being nervous.  Now
imagine if that target was moving?  Now imagine if that target was moving, and it was a crazy bastard coming at you with a knife, and you were
nervous!  Do you really think you can hit that moving target even while you are scared?

#4:  Legality:  as a matter of fact, your gun is not much good almost anywhere you'd actually want to take it.  You cannot go across state lines.
You cannot go into ANY ESTABLISHMENT THAT SERVES ALCOHOL.  That means bars, clubs, restaurants, etc.  You cannot go into any
GOVERNMENT BUILDING.  You cannot go into any SCHOOL or UNIVERSITY.  You cannot go into any NATIONAL PARK.  So where can you go?
Basically, to work and back home.  And don't even think about "sneaking it in" because if you get caught in a prohibited place it is a SERIOUS
offense.  And in some states like California, NJ, and NY, you aren't even allowed to carry one anyway!  And the criminals know this!

#5:  Effectiveness:  believe it or not, just because you shoot someone doesn't automatically make them stop.  Police shot a man 6 times but he
was in a drugged-out rage and he still managed to stab a cop before he finally died.  In Florida, a man took 2 bullets to the head but still
managed to shoot an officer before he died.  The problem is that the bullet doesn't stop the adrenaline.  In fact, it actually increases adrenaline.
So you will kill the guy, sure, but it might take 30 seconds.  A person with a knife can do a lot of damage to you in 30 seconds.  Only a shotgun
or a rifle can stop someone instantly.  Handguns, even the biggest ones, aren't as good.  And you probably won't want a giant handgun if you
want it for protection.  You'll probably want something small so you can hide it in your purse.  Well, something small will shoot small bullets which
are even less effective than the big ones, which also don't work anyway.

#6:  Getting in Trouble:  if you shoot someone, even if it is self-defense, you are going to jail that night.  You can't hide, because the bullets of a
gun have a "fingerprint" that tells the cops exactly which gun it came out of.  When you buy the gun, the cops have already fired it twice and so
they have a computer record of the gun's fingerprint.  The bullets can be used to identify you.  So you cannot run or they will get you for leaving
the scene.  So after you shoot someone, even in self-defense, you will get arrested.  You will have to call a lawyer, and there will be a messy
court battle as courts try to decide if you used "excessive force."  If the criminal didn't have a gun, you will have a problem.  Even if it is a large
crazy man with a knife.  Even the cops get in trouble every time they use a gun on a civilian.  It will be even worse for you, because judges don't
protect civilians as readily as they protect cops.  Even if you are found "not guilty" it is still a hassle to hire the lawyers and go to court, miss
work, etc.

Good things about Guns:
#1:  They are fun
#2:  There is no #2.  They are fun, and that's about it.  Anyone who thinks anything more about them is stupid and/or delusional.  Target
shooting is a fun hobby.  That's about all a gun is good for.  That and maybe going to war.

The solution:
There is a solution.  BEAR PEPPER SPRAY.  This is MUCH STRONGER than the "People Pepper Spray."  Now let's compare the Bear
Spray to a Gun using the same criteria listed above:

#1:  Cost:  The BEST Bear Spray on the market costs $40.  No license or permits required.

#2:  Danger:  There is no danger in the house.  The worst that can happen is that you or your kid can accidentally spray themselves in the eyes.
They go to the hospital to get the eyes flushed out, but no permanent damage.   This stuff is about as dangerous as a chemical fire
extinguisher.

#3:  Difficulty:  The spray shoots 30 feet with a diameter of 6 feet.  You can't miss!  Even a blind person can hit a target.  Even if you are scared,
you still can't miss.  BTW, the "people pepper spray" only shoots about 6-10 feet which is why I prefer the Bear spray.

#4:  Legality:  This stuff is perfectly legal to take across state lines, into any bar, into any train, into any park.  You can't bring it on a plane
though, because it is an "aerosol."  But for $40, you can buy some in whatever city you are travelling in, if you are concerned and want extra
safety while you travel.

#5:  Effectiveness:  This stuff stops any bear dead in its tracks.  What it will do to a human is scary.  The spray burns your skin, nose, eyes, and
mouth.  If it gets in your lungs, you will fall to the ground and not be able to take a complete breath.  You are blind, and burning.  This stops any
attack.  A person with a knife will not be able to stab you.  He won't be able to see you.  You spray him, and walk away to the side.  He can not
find you.

#6:  Getting in trouble:  Since the bear spray doesn't kill anyone, you can't get in trouble.  If you want, you can just walk away and the cops will
never know it was you.  There is no way to trace the spray to a person.  But even if you stick around, you can't get in much trouble because the
spray doesn't kill anyone.  The only way you can get in trouble is if you spray some old lady or something like that.  I mean, it has to be really
obviously wrong for you to get in trouble.

O.k., so here is the best Bear Spray in USA:  Counter Assault.  Do not buy imitations!  Also, make sure you buy at least 2 cans.  YOU
MUST PRACTICE USING THE FIRST CAN, so that you will know what to do in an Emergency situation.  This is very important!  When a guy is
running towards you in a parking lot with a knife, that is NOT the time to start "reading the label" and "trying to figure it out."!!!  (make sure you
practice far away from any one, in the middle of a backyard is probably o.k., but don't shoot into the wind!  Specifically, you want to practice
pulling it out of your purse or belt holder and shooting a small squirt.  Try and do this at least 10 times as fast as possible).

Here in Arizona there is a lot of Desert where you can just go and shoot to your heart's content.  Many of my friends own guns, and we like to go
Target shooting.  It's a lot of fun.
Here's my girlfriend firing an AR15
Bushmaster High-powered Rifle.
Here's Bekah firing a 0.357 Magnum
handgun.  Does that look like it fits in a
purse?

BTW, all of this stuff belongs to my
friend Ron, shown in the background
here.  Ron is about 50 years old, and
extremely responsible.  All of the gear
you see here is his:  the table, the ear
protection, the chairs, the sun cover,
the targets (not shown).

We follow strict safety rules when we
go shooting.  For example, before
anyone can go to retrieve a target, all
other guns must be unloaded and on
the table.  No one is allowed to hold
their gun while others are retrieving
targets.  Also, no alcohol is ever
brought.  You might think it would be
o.k. to have a beer out in the
wilderness while shooting, but it's one
of our rules not to mix guns and
alcohol.
